Aiken Standard

Position Description:  Working manager for all press and mailroom activities for Aiken Communications’ daily and weekly newspapers, and for the commercial print operation.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, hires, trains and schedules staff
  • Responsible for department budgeting, expense and revenue control, and producing regular financial and production reports
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance and department safety
  • Ordering and maintaining supplies
  • Perform training (forklift, lockout/tagout, & safety training)
  • Assure that product is produced according to customer needs
  • Manage all work as it proceeds through the pressroom
  • Provide on-the-job training in specified circumstances
  • Responsible for the control of loss and spoilage in the department
  • Reinforce all company rules and policies consistently, especially regarding safety devices and procedures.

Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:

  • Must have experience and working knowledge of a Goss Community press (or the like), a Kansa inserting machine (or the like) and computer-to-plate technology
  • Must be a proven leader with supervisory experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication (both oral and written)
  • Ability to supervise and train employees
  • Must have strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to prioritize effectively in scheduling work through the department
  • Should be proficient with Excel spreadsheets
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Physical Requirement:

  • Physically able to stand on feet eight to ten hours a day and maintain a steady pace
  • Must be able to bend, twist, stretch and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Climb ladders of press
  • Must be able to climb over and under press
  • Able to work in close quarters in a noisy environment
  • Must be able to work with press that produces newsprint dust
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
