PRESS OPERATOR

Aiken Standard

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The press operator read and understands layouts; sets up and operates offset press equipment; ensures quality product; assists in equipment repair; assess problems; operates reels; handles newsprint rolls; keeps equipment and work area clean.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.     Read and understand job layouts.

2.     Properly set up and operate offset printing equipment.

3.     Move, load, and prepare newsprint rolls weighing up to 2200 pounds.

4.     Ensure quality of product during the press run.

5.     Assist in cleaning and maintenance.

6.     Clean pipe rollers and assist in roller changes.

7.     Preset units for printing; Includes hooking up ink hoses and purging ink.

8.     Plate up and bar cylinders.

9.     Engage and disengage units.

10.  Lead in tapes, climbing superstructure on all units when needed.

11.  Set ink and water balance.

12.  Register color.

13.  Set gray bars using densitometer.

14.  Monitor products for print quality.

15.  Function clearly in a deadline driven environment.

16.  Push large metal waste dumpsters into the warehouse.

17.  Clean up all oil spills and pump out pits when needed.

Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum of 1-3 + years-experience in production environment
  • Must demonstrate the ability to manage production runs
  • Flexibility to work non-routine shifts as required including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Basic math skills
  • Must be able to use the tools and equipment associated with the printing process.
  • Must be able to discern color (cannot be color-blind)

  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to follow procedures within a defined structure yet have a willingness to try new ideas

Physical Requirements, Work Environment and Travel:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. the employee frequently must squat, stoop, or kneel, reach about the head and reach forward. The employee continuously used hand strength t grasp tools and climb on ladders/stairs. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

 

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, he employee is occasionally exposed to wet and /or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.
