Post and Courier

The Post and Courier is seeking an analytical and marketing-minded Data Scientist to join our team. This candidate will help discover meaningful insights hidden amongst the vast amounts of data, and help the organization make smart decisions in order to deliver the best products and services. Candidates must be curious and creative and be able to discern which problems are important to solve for the organization and to identify tactical ways the business should be leveraging its data.


  • Generate actionable insights using advanced statistical techniques such as predictive statistical models, customer profiling, segmentation analysis, survey design and analysis and data mining.
    Translate observations to shared knowledge, and contribute to strategy on how to solve core business problems.
    Analyze multiple datasets to generate consumer insights with the intent of creating manageable analytical processes.
    Experiment with various tools and technologies with the end goal of creating innovative data-driven insights at a quick pace.
    Understand in depth, design and inform statistically valid tests with test and control groups and to manage the process of identifying testing strategies.
    Extend company’s data with third party sources of information when needed.
    Enhance data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems.
  • Ability to look at data and identify patterns, problems, or analysis opportunities.
    Using big data to independently generate consumer insights and manage genre based price elasticity curves and other routine analyses like affinity analysis and clusters.
    Research new ways for modeling and predicting end-user behavior. Designs experiments to answer targeted questions.
    Communicate statistical modeling results into measures of business impact.
    Stay ahead of industry trends and how data insights are creatively solving problems.
    And other duties as assigned.

Requirements, minimum education level, and experience:

  • B.S. in computer science, math, statistics or related field required. Masters or PhD strongly preferred.
    3+ years experience in solving business problems with statistical modeling incorporating machine learning, data mining, and exploratory data analysis.
    Must be a self-starter who will help lead the team in discussions on how to make smart data-driven decisions.
    Must be able to dive in at a granular level to mine and understand complex behaviors, trends, and inferences.
    Must be able to clearly and fluently translate their technical findings to a non-technical team arming various members of the organization with quantified insights.
    Comfortable working with big data technologies (Hardtop, HDFS, Spark, Cassandra, SQL, Nosily)
    Prototyping and scripting experience (R/SAS/Mat lab, Python)
    Must have a working knowledge of external data sources especially as related to the consumer.
    Highly analytical, results oriented, have superior organizational skills with a strong attention to details and deadlines and be able to effectively manage multiple projects/assignments simultaneously.
    Preferred background in media.
